Hazard is back with The Platinum Shadows EP

DJ Hazard needs no introduction – king of the dancefloor, tracks like ‘Busted’ and ‘Mr Happy’ cemented his reputation as one of the heaviest producers in the drum & bass game, and now he’s back to drop an immense EP for DJ Hype & Pascal’s Playaz imprint.

The ‘Platinum Shadow’ EP takes no prisoners right from the off as ‘Psychedelic’ opens your mind to a world of aural colours and scattered fractal beats. Distinctive DJ Hazard flavours run riot with your senses as those trademark bass bubbles drift into your consciousness.

Gangsta/Above the Clouds

Anthem alert! Just when you thought it was safe to leave the dance floor the Shogun Audio clique draw for something absolutely, unequivocally, darn right dangerous! This time it comes from drum and bass legends Total Science as they team up with SPY for what is without doubt a killer debut 12” on Shogun; the first of many from this combo (we hope!).

‘Gangsta’, as if you couldn’t guess from the name, is dark and determined to run away with your soul from the off. It’s a true old-skool stepper for 2010, evoking memories of ‘Shadow Boxing’, with its creeping three tone reece bass that’ll own you within seconds of it dropping from behind a hazy mist of eerie pads and a simple break. Echoed vox adds to the menace as the bass morphs ever so slightly throughout to keep it moving to complete a gem of a track. Proper sinister, moody D&B made by true thoroughbreds of the genre.

Canopy/Remorse

New blood alert! Bringing through yet more untapped talent is the people’s choice, Critical Music, who bring us the debut release from a trio of boxfresh producers that’s already been doing damage with those lucky enough to have it. With FD being one of the brains behind possibly the most forward-thinking drum and bass event in London, Medium, you know before listening the force is strong on this one.

Beautifully breezy pads open up ‘Canopy’ and a straight down the line break gets things moving nicely as added percussion seaps in along the way before the drop. Out go the pads and in comes a refreshingly spacious arrangement of percussive FX and thumping deep subs perfect for those dark late-night dance floors. Wait for the sumptuous atmospherics to return and you can’t help but be swept away by the groove as it carries us all the way to the end. A bit special.

Oh My Dear (Body & Soul Rmx) / Vampires (Phetsta Rmx)

On form once again is the mighty Mainframe Recordings who drop their first killer 12” for 2010 with two absolute dynamite remixes, both of which have been wreaking dance floor havoc on dubplate over the past few months. So buckle up and hold on tight, things are about to get very rowdy indeed!

Kicking of proceedings are the Austrian super-duo Body & Soul who are drawn in to mash up label boss DisasZt and Infame’s smasher from last year ‘Oh My Dear’ and the outcome is….rewind selecta!! This gem is currently the weapon of choice for DJ’s needing the destroy the dance and it’s not hard to see why. Sleek intro, massive builds, crashing breaks and the most gnarly buzz-saw bass we’ve heard in a very long time. Pure unadulterated D&B filth, just how we like it!

Redlines ft. Riya/Skinz

As we head into the warmer months camp Critical brings a true sunshine release from one of D&B’s tour de force production duos, Total Science. The original jungle dons push all the right buttons here as they team up with Riya for a sumptuous vocal excursion like no other.

‘Redlines’ has already been given the thumbs up by the likes of Mistajam and Ras Kwame on BBC Radio 1/1xtra and it’s not hard to see why. A solid locked groove rolls from the start on this one with a polished break and beautiful melancholic piano hook that draw you in before the real treat begins; when Riya’s gorgeous vocal drops in your heart will melt. Effortless audio bliss for all the lovers out there.

History of the Future/Verve ft. Tali

Just when you thought the coast was clear….they’re back again! Camo & Krooked are surely the most prolific producers in drum and bass right now and with this absolute gem over on Shimon’s Audioporn imprint they seem to have raised their bar once more.

‘History Of The Future’ turns everything you’ve ever known upside down as the boys kick it off with a totally skanking 4/4 electro-house vibe to spice up those floors. A gradual tempo change then ramps things up to D&B levels for the fun to continue at breakneck pace as this smasher runs riot. An absolute monster of a tune that’s been getting hammered by all and sundry lately. Electro-infused D&B’s been done before but not like this; genre-hopping, twin turbo-charger style!
