Despicable Youth – Lesson 1 EP – Lockdown Recordings

Despicable Youth are the latest acts to drop a new release on Lockdown Recordings. The duo, who cite Emperor, Break, Hazard and Enei as influences, bring together the Lesson 1 EP, so get your pens and papers ready, there will be test.

2014 has started off hot for the Bristol-based DY, with bookings coming in as well as interest from throughout the scene. Lesson 1 is their debut EP, and the guys already have a string of other releases ready to roll. Their star is very much in the ascendency, so get ready for the Lesson.

Things start in the Pitch Black, where characteristic depth is layered by sliding synths and creepy atmospherics. The tune is so well put together, you can just tell how long the guys have spent in the studio to get things this perfect. Natural talent, mixed with hard work and dedication, leads to an astonishing lead track on one of the most devastating debuts of the year. This description is equally fitting for Deaf Trap, which takes the theme and runs with it, developing the idea of closed-in, claustrophobic, musical hell. Dark, rough and oh so good.

The title cut is up next, redefining the sound once again, mixing up a devastating beat with inch-perfect samples, allowing touches of old skoold&b into the mix, whilst still being resolutely futuristic. Another thing which sets this EP apart from others in the bass which the producers bring to the table.Warming, rounded, but still as hard as a bag of spanners, those that like their low end are going to love Lesson 1.

Rounding things off is No Cigar, a fitting end to the EP which features TwitcheeCordz on the rhymes. Sounding like some sort of Noisia-meets-The Prototypes mash up, this is still uniquely DY. Driving, rousing and totally in your face, this one’ll be melting systems in no time.

The amazing Lesson 1 EP from Despicable Youth is one of the most total, most impressive debuts of 2014. Get your copy without delay.
